A number of MAGA and Republican figures have attacked former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's suggestion that a carving of President Joe Biden could be added to Mount Rushmore. This bold statement came during an interview on CBS News Sunday Morning, where Pelosi praised Biden's accomplishments during his presidency, which is set to conclude in January. Her remarks sparked significant controversy, prompting reactions from various political figures.
On July 21, President Biden confirmed he would not be seeking reelection, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for the upcoming presidential race. This decision followed intense pressure, reportedly spearheaded by Pelosi, aiming to convince him to withdraw from the 2024 race after a challenging CNN debate performance. In response to these allegations, Pelosi firmly stated on-air that she "didn't call one person," denying any involvement in a supposed pressure campaign.
Pelosi further expressed her belief that Biden is at the "top of his game" and is such a "consequential" president that he merits inclusion alongside the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln on the iconic South Dakota monument. When Lesley Stahl asked if Biden "belongs" on Mount Rushmore, Pelosi responded, "You got Teddy Roosevelt up there, and he's wonderful. I don't say take him down, but you can add Biden."
In reaction to her remarks, numerous Trump supporters, including South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, have derided Pelosi's suggestion, with various clips of her comments going viral across social media platforms. Noem tweeted her disapproval, stating, "Sorry Nancy, Mount Rushmore is not a place to celebrate someone who lied about his mental decline, willfully and knowingly endangered the lives of the American people, crushed American families, undermined the Constitution, and weakened our country at home and abroad."
The Republican National Committee's research account also weighed in, labeling Pelosi's suggestion as "Crazy Nancy's delusions." Notable political consultant and staunch Trump ally Roger Stone chimed in with a mocking remark, suggesting that "somebody is drunk again," potentially referencing manipulated videos that circulated in 2019 depicting Pelosi in a distorted manner.
Nick Sortor, a journalist known for his appearances on right-wing media, commented on the shocking nature of Pelosi's suggestion, stating, "Nancy Pelosi just told CBS Sunday Morning that Joe Biden should be added to Mt. Rushmore. I kid you not. Even liberal anchor Lesley Stahl was like 'what the hell?'" Newsweek has reached out to the White House and Pelosi's office for further comments on this developing story.
In another part of her interview, Pelosi rejected claims that she orchestrated a plot to pressure Biden into stepping down due to concerns about his electoral viability against Trump. "No, I wasn't a leader of any pressure party," she asserted. "Well, let me say things that I didn't do. I didn't call one person. I did not call one person. I could always say to him, 'I never called anybody.'" She added that she had confidence in Biden to make the right decisions for the nation, saying, "Whatever that is, we'll go with."
