And with their less formidable reptilian cousins becoming increasingly popular as household pets, people are ever-more interested in the lifespan of lizards. So how long do lizards live? We asked the experts.

  • Interesting facts about specific lizard species and their unique life cycles.

How Long Do Lizards Live in the Wild?

Dr. James Stroud, a Postdoctoral Researcher at The Losos Lab at Washington University in St. Louis, shared with Newsweek that the lifespan of these intriguing reptiles can vary dramatically due to the sheer diversity of the creatures. This claim is echoed by Martin Whiting, Professor of Animal Behavior at Sydney's Macquarie University, who states that there is enormous variation in the lifespan of lizards.

According to Whiting, the time these remarkable animals can spend on Earth can range from just a few months to several decades. Factors such as species, habitat, and environmental conditions significantly influence their lifespan. For instance, some lizards, known as annual lizards, typically do not survive longer than a year in the wild.

In one extreme case, Labord's chameleon from Madagascar spends most of its life as an egg. Once it hatches, it reaches sexual maturity in less than two months, breeds, and dies at four to five months. Interestingly, for part of the year, there may be no chameleons in the population, only eggs!

How Long Do Pet Lizards Live?

Lizards have become increasingly popular as household pets, leading many owners to inquire about their lifespan. Professor Whiting believes that lizards' lifespan is heavily influenced by the conditions and care they receive while in captivity. While some lizards may only live for about a year in the wild, their lifespan can significantly extend in captivity due to the absence of predators and parasites, as well as the availability of food.

Reptiles in captivity are sheltered from many of the dangers they face in the wild. Proper care, including a balanced diet, appropriate habitat conditions, and regular health checks, can contribute to a much longer lifespan for pet lizards.

How to Look After a Pet Lizard

To ensure your pet lizard lives a long and healthy life, proper care and attention to its needs are crucial. Whether you have a gecko or an iguana, factors such as lighting, heating, and humidity play a key role in replicating their natural habitat. A clean living environment is essential to avoid diseases that can affect these reptiles.

Each lizard species may have different dietary preferences, so it is important to provide a varied diet that goes beyond just insects. In addition, reptiles require sufficient quantities of calcium and vitamins in forms they enjoy to thrive.

Lastly, lizards are cold-blooded creatures, which means that the temperature of their surroundings, including water sources, is vital for their overall well-being. Keeping these factors in mind can greatly enhance your lizard's quality of life and longevity.
