How Long Do Lizards Live in the Wild?

Dr. James Stroud, a Postdoctoral Researcher at The Losos Lab at Washington University in St. Louis, shared with Newsweek that the lifespan of these intriguing reptiles can vary dramatically due to the sheer diversity of the creatures. This claim is echoed by Martin Whiting, Professor of Animal Behavior at Sydney's Macquarie University, who states that there is enormous variation in the lifespan of lizards.

According to Whiting, the time these remarkable animals can spend on Earth can range from just a few months to several decades. Factors such as species, habitat, and environmental conditions significantly influence their lifespan. For instance, some lizards, known as annual lizards, typically do not survive longer than a year in the wild.

In one extreme case, Labord's chameleon from Madagascar spends most of its life as an egg. Once it hatches, it reaches sexual maturity in less than two months, breeds, and dies at four to five months. Interestingly, for part of the year, there may be no chameleons in the population, only eggs!
