When Albina Angan, 20, relocated for work, she was so excited to start a new chapter of her life alongside her husband in Turkey. But what she hadn't expected was that her health would take a turn for the worst. After moving to Istanbul in early 2023, Angan admits that she was deeply stressed with work, and she turned to food as her crutch in that difficult time. "I didn't even eat out of hunger, but just out of boredom, anger, and any other emotion I happened to feel," she told Newsweek.
In just two months, she gained 22 pounds, and her weight peaked at 185 lbs. Not only did she dislike her reflection, but her health also deteriorated. Sleeping became difficult, she had less energy, and the symptoms of her polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) became unbearable. It was a tough realization for Angan, especially when her mother-in-law showed her a photo that made her feel horrified. "My face looked swollen, I had a double chin, bags under my eyes. I decided that it was time to change something, but I just didn't know how to start," she said.
PCOS is a health condition that affects between 6 and 12 percent of women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The lifelong condition can impact a woman's fertility by preventing ovulation, as well as leading to irregular periods, excess hair growth, and insulin resistance. For women who are insulin resistant, monitoring diet and maintaining regular exercise is essential.
In the past, Angan tried various methods to shed pounds but found herself returning to square one. Despite her efforts with herbal teas, small meals, and hydration, nothing worked, leaving her feeling hopeless. However, a significant turning point came in April 2023 when she recognized the importance of nutrition and began following a structured plan.
Albina Angan's Transformation Journey
As Angan followed her new dietary plan, she began eating at 8 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. Within three months, she lost 50 lbs, settling at a healthy weight of 132 lbs. Initially, the strict routine was challenging, but she quickly noticed positive changes. "I was so proud of myself; it was as if I was a Victoria's Secret model," she joked.
While the rapid weight loss was unexpected, Angan learned that a healthier weight loss rate is typically 1 to 2 pounds per week, according to the CDC. Following her dietary guidelines became part of her lifestyle, and she experienced less difficulty maintaining her new weight.
Angan's New Routine:
- Breakfast should be the largest meal of the day, packed with protein.
- Dinner should be half the size of breakfast, focusing on vegetables.
- Maintain a gap of six to eight hours between breakfast and dinner.
- Keep a 16 to 18-hour fast overnight.
- Limit processed foods to no more than 10 percent of your diet.
Despite the challenges, Angan persisted. "I was surprised that the weight came off so quickly and that I kept it off for so long," she said. "Usually, I would break down after a week, but day by day, I realized that this was becoming my lifestyle."
Intermittent fasting was a daunting concept for her at first. However, health expert Dr. Mindy Pelz emphasizes that it can significantly aid in weight loss and stabilize blood sugar levels, suppressing hunger and cravings. "Ironically, not eating entirely can actually reduce your hunger," she advised.
Angan's journey demonstrates that with the right mindset, determination, and a structured plan, overcoming weight-related challenges is achievable. She now shares her story on TikTok, inspiring others who may feel trapped in their struggles. "Half the people online found my posts inspiring and motivating," she said, expressing gratitude for the support she received.
With her renewed health and happiness, Angan reflects on her transformation. "There is nothing better than a healthy body and mind. By giving your body clean food full of vitamins and minerals, you will become happier inside." Her story serves as a reminder that true happiness comes from self-care and a balanced lifestyle.
