High Surf Advisory Issued In Hawaii: What Swimmers Need To Know

On Friday, the National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists in Hawaii issued a high surf advisory, urging swimmers to remain cautious due to dangerous water conditions. This advisory affects all east-facing shores across the Hawaiian islands, highlighting specific regions such as Olomana, Maui Windward West, Kauai East, Koolau Windward, Molokai Southeast, Windward Haleakala, Big Island East, and Big Island North. Swimmers and beachgoers are advised to heed the warnings as a "moderate to large, medium period" swell is expected to produce advisory-level surf.

The advisory indicates that the surf will peak on Friday afternoon into the evening hours, gradually declining throughout the weekend. It is essential for those planning to engage in water activities to be aware of the swell, which is characterized as a series of waves generated by storm winds.

In addition to the high surf advisory, meteorologist Dennis Trotter from NWS pointed out that such wave conditions are typical during the transition to the winter season in Hawaii. While the current swell is not linked to Hurricane Kristy, which is a Category 3 storm in the eastern Pacific, there is a possibility of increased wave heights early next week due to this storm. Therefore, swimmers must remain vigilant and informed about the evolving weather conditions.

Hawaii Swimmers Warned About Going in Water

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring Hurricane Kristy, which has exhibited rapid intensification, reaching Category 5 strength earlier this week. Currently, Kristy's maximum sustained winds are clocked at 115 mph. Although it is not expected to make landfall, the storm is likely to create dangerous surf conditions in other regions, particularly along the west coast of the Baja California peninsula.

Swimmers and mariners are encouraged to consult their local weather offices for updates and warnings, especially with the added marine weather statement issued for windward waters of Maui County and Big Island. The statement indicates that a medium period swell, measuring 6 to 8 feet, will peak through Friday evening, prompting strong surges in north-facing harbors.

Finally, those in Southern California should also be aware of dense fog affecting coastal areas. Awareness and caution are crucial for safety during these unpredictable weather conditions, making it imperative for swimmers and boaters to stay informed and prepared.
