Walking at least 10,000 steps a day to support a healthy lifestyle has been touted as an important goal for some time—but what impact does walking thousands of steps a day really have on your life? From bustling cities like London to vibrant neighborhoods in New York, people are rising to the challenge of walking more, with many exceeding the 10,000-step mark and aiming for 20,000 to 25,000 steps daily. This shift is more than a trend; it's a movement towards better health and well-being.

A significant study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology revealed that taking at least 3,967 steps daily can lower the risk of dying from any cause, while just 2,337 steps a day can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, another study in JAMA Neurology from 2019 indicated that approximately 8,900 steps per day may slow cognitive decline and brain volume loss in high-risk individuals. These findings highlight the profound effects that walking can have on our health.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has seen a decline in walking, with research indicating that Americans took about 600 fewer steps daily post-pandemic. Yet, amidst these challenges, four passionate walkers shared with Newsweek how pushing themselves to achieve their walking goals has dramatically transformed their lives, showcasing the power of walking as both a physical activity and a mental escape.

When Kathleen Dorsey Sanderson, 38, from American Fork, Utah, suddenly developed dizzy spells, she felt inspired to make a change. "If I sat down, I'd just shake, and the dizziness would get worse," Kathleen shared with Newsweek. Concerned for her health, she sought medical advice and was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Determined to regain control, she adopted walking as a daily routine, complementing it with healthier eating habits.

Initially aiming for 10,000 steps a day, Kathleen quickly surpassed her goal, challenging herself to walk a remarkable 20,000 steps daily. "It took me about 3-4 months to consistently hit 20,000 steps," she reflected. Gradually, she found that walking not only eased her symptoms but also became her favorite form of exercise.

As Kathleen committed more to her walking routine, her physical and mental health flourished. "Since I started doing 20,000 steps a day and eating healthier, I've lost 70 pounds," she exclaimed. She has also eliminated her need for high blood pressure medication and continues to prioritize her daily walks, beginning each morning with a brisk four-mile walk to meet her 20,000-step goal.

Starting with 7,000-10,000 steps, he gradually increased his goal to 20,000. He began his walking journey in spring, taking advantage of the pleasant weather to enhance his route.

Initially, Freddie walked to burn calories due to an eating disorder, but as he healed, he found joy in walking. It became a source of freedom and control for him. "I feel happy going out walking because I can explore all around my city and cool forests and stores and neighborhoods. It makes me happy and is also a great way to keep healthy," Freddie said.
