The fifth and final season of The Last Kingdom is streaming on Netflix now, and audiences want to know everything about the show’s cast and characters. In the finale, viewers are introduced to Uhtred of Bebbanburg's (played by Alexander Dreymon) three children: young Uhtred (Finn Elliot), his daughter Stiorra (Ruby Hartley), and his youngest son, Osbert (Olly Rhodes). This season has sparked considerable interest in the legacy of Uhtred and the roles that his children play in his story.
Fans have been particularly intrigued by the arrival of his youngest son, Osbert, at Bebbanburg. While the focus has largely been on Uhtred's sons, his fearless daughter, Stiorra, has also emerged as a significant character. With the season exploring their dynamics, many viewers are eager to learn more about these characters and their backgrounds.
Newsweek has everything you need to know, including details about Uhtred's relationships with his children and the pivotal moments that define them throughout this season.
Who is Stiorra's Mother?
Stiorra's mother is Gisela (Peri Baumeister), the second wife of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Gisela was the sister of Guthred of Northumbria and the daughter of Danish warrior Jarl Harthacnut. Together, Gisela and Uhtred had three children: Uhtred, Stiorra, and Osbert. Sadly, Gisela died in Season 3 of The Last Kingdom, giving birth to her third child, Osbert.
In The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, the novel series The Last Kingdom is based on, Stiorra is described as tall and having her mother’s face. She was raised by her father in Cookham but spent most of her early years at Lady Aethelflaed's (Millie Brady) Droitwich estate. Stiorra’s character has grown significantly, showcasing strength and resilience as she navigates her complicated heritage.
She falls in love with Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) in Season 4 and later marries him. Together, they have children who tragically die of the plague. In the final season of The Last Kingdom, Stiorra plays a crucial role in helping her father fight against Constantin and the Scots, despite her loyalty to the Danes. Her commitment to the Saxon cause illustrates her desire for harmony between her people and her father's wish for victory.
Who Are Uhtred's Other Children?
Young Uhtred
Young Uhtred, also known as Oswald, is Uhtred and Gisela's oldest son. In Season 4, he bonded with Father Beocca (Ian Hart), who sacrificed himself for Young Uhtred at the start of the season. Raised Christian after being taken hostage by King Alfred (David Dawson), Young Uhtred gradually warmed up to his father's Pagan beliefs when they reunited, developing a close bond.
Just like his sister Stiorra, Young Uhtred agreed to fight alongside his father for the future of Bebbanburg. However, tragedy struck when Uhtred was castrated by his father's rival Brida (Emily Cox), raising questions about his status as the heir to Bebbanburg. Young Uhtred is portrayed by Elliot, who has gained recognition for his roles in The Crown and Outcast.
Osbert
After Gisela's death, Osbert was adopted by the Church. As a result, he has lived his life unaware of who his father or siblings are. However, this changes at the end of Season 5 when Hild (Eva Birthistle) brings Osbert to the gates of Bebbanburg. Outside the gates, Osbert questions, "Why are we going to the fortress?" Hild explains that they are on their way to meet the new Lord of Bebbanburg.
She adds, "I made a little inquiry, and I think the new lord may be able to tell you something of your origins." With Osbert finally meeting his father and discovering who he truly is, there is significant potential for him to play a pivotal role in the upcoming The Last Kingdom film, Seven Kings Must Die. If the film adheres closely to Cornwell's source material, Osbert will grow into a great warrior and become his father's heir. Up-and-coming actor Rhodes portrays young Osbert in The Last Kingdom.
The Last Kingdom Seasons 1 to 5 are streaming on Netflix now, with Seven Kings Must Die currently in production. The series has captivated audiences with its intricate storytelling and rich character development, especially highlighting the legacy of Uhtred and his family.
