Atreus: The Growth Of A Key Character In God Of War: Ragnarök

God Of War Ragnarok Shows How Atreus Learned From Kratos

Atreus has become a significant part of the story since the reboot of God of War back in 2018. As the son of Kratos, and now believed to be Loki, the character has a lot of room to grow in the coming chapter, God of War: Ragnarök. Because quite a bit of time has passed since God of War 2018, Atreus has already grown a little. But how much time has passed since that first game, and how old is Atreus in God of War: Ragnarök? Here’s what you need to know.

According to the novelization surrounding God of War, Atreus was roughly 11 years old when the events of God of War 2018 took place. Now, with most of Fimbulwinter having passed before the events of God of War: Ragnarök, we can guess that Atreus has aged at least three years since that first modern game. This means he would be around 14 years old, give or take a few months.

At 14, Atreus is still very young, and thus still has a lot to learn, as discussed in Newsweek's God of War: Ragnarök review. However, being that young doesn’t make him useless. In fact, Kratos has spent the last three years training him to be a better, stronger fighter. Since Atreus has learned that he, too, is a god, he’s able to embrace that fully in God of War: Ragnarök.

This aging is evident as Atreus looks and sounds older, though not by much. It’s not like ten or twenty years have passed since the first game, which would have aged Atreus significantly more. Since we know that Ragnarök is coming in the newest chapter of the game—Sony Santa Monica has repeatedly stated that this chapter will conclude the Norse portion of Kratos and Atreus’ story—this gives us a timeline to consider.

Even with Atreus being just 14, there’s still plenty for him to experience within the game. Players will encounter many things throughout the nine realms, and they will undoubtedly find themselves farming for Hacksilver and mastering the parry mechanic to survive longer in more challenging combat scenarios found within God of War: Ragnarök.

This also means that Kratos is now three years older too. However, defining his age is a bit less precise, as it’s never fully outlined in the previous games.
