Ariana Grande is currently facing significant backlash from fans following her recent interview with Vanity Fair, where she openly discussed the drama surrounding her relationship with Ethan Slater. The 31-year-old singer began dating Slater, 32, last year during the filming of the much-anticipated adaptation of Wicked, which is set to premiere this fall. This new romance emerged concurrently with the endings of both of their marriages, which has sparked rampant speculation and criticism, especially concerning rumors that suggest Grande cheated on her ex-husband, Dalton Gomez.
In the interview published on September 30, Grande expressed her disappointment regarding the negative narrative that has surrounded her romance. She revealed that she "went through a lot of life changes during the filming of [the] movie." The singer recognized that the tabloids had a field day creating sensational stories that served their interests, yet she lamented that so many people believed the worst version of her story.
Following the release of the article, many fans took to social media to express their opinions on the singer's relationship. One user on X (formerly known as Twitter) questioned, "So what's the right version tho sis....she's always dancing around it lowkey...." while another stated, "These celebs dump their husbands and wives after having affairs and scandals and then want to blame everyone but themselves. Girl stop."
In her defense of Slater, Grande emphasized that the representation of him in the tabloids is inaccurate, stating, "There couldn't be a less accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the tabloids spread about him." She went on to commend his character, saying that "no one on this earth tries harder or spreads themselves thinner to be there for the people that he loves and cares about."
Despite the backlash, some fans have rallied to support Grande, arguing that she hasn't done anything wrong and urging others to stop labeling her as a "homewrecker." This controversy stems from the timing of her relationship with Slater, which began in July 2023, around the same time she separated from Gomez after two years of marriage. Slater also faced a similar situation, divorcing his wife, Lilly Jay, during that period. Jay has publicly criticized Grande, claiming that her family became "collateral damage" and labeling Grande as "not a girl's girl."
