UFC 242 Poirier contemplates retirement in statement after Khabib loss

UFC legend and former champion Dustin Poirier has been hinting at retirement for months, following his loss to current lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. After the fight, Poirier told many publications that he was looking to retire soon.

Poirier joined "The Ariel Helwani Show" to also state that he would have retired that night had he won the belt. However, that did not come to fruition. After months of speculation, Poirier posted "uno mas" on his social media, indicating that he would be returning for at least one more fight in the UFC.

Now, Poirier has joined "The Ariel Helwani Show" again to discuss more about his retirement fight, and where that is set to take place. Initially, host Ariel Helwani asks Poirier for clarity on his retirement, which Poirier confirmed is not going to happen right now.

"I will fight again, it's just how this thing unfolds, we'll see when I retire. It could be uno mas or dos mas. I had a good meeting at the UFC headquarters," Poirier stated.

In his latest interview, Poirier showed his passion and commitment to fighting, expressing his desire to compete against the toughest opponents before hanging up his gloves. He emphasized that he aims to conclude his career on his own terms, ideally in his home state of Louisiana.

Poirier's journey in the UFC is characterized by resilience and determination. His ability to bounce back from setbacks and continue pushing forward exemplifies the spirit of a true champion.

Future Fighting Plans

Helwani begins to unpack the retirement fight with Poirier. Initially, the UFC star stated he might engage in two fights before he calls it a career, but he dropped the location and dream that he is working on with the promotion for his true final fight in the UFC.

"My goal is to get a fight/event here in Louisiana. Whether that's Lafayette, Louisiana, or New Orleans, I want to lay the gloves down where I started," Poirier added.

The lightweight contender also announced that he is currently working with the UFC to obtain this goal, but it's difficult considering the organization can sometimes book events a year in advance. Still, Poirier is pushing for a fight in his home state.

"My goal is to take my gloves off in Louisiana and retire at home," Poirier added.

What's interesting about the interview is Poirier has also indicated that he wants to fight the toughest competition in his final fight and name-dropped Justin Gaethje as a potential final opponent.

Gaethje and Poirier are 1-1 in their fights. Both have knocked each other out, and a trilogy for the pair would be an incredible final bout for Poirier. Poirier also revealed that if the UFC can grant him the event in Louisiana, he will retire after that fight — provided it comes soon. He also stated that he wants to fight two more times if he has to wait for a year for this event to happen.

If Poirier fights once or twice, he has had a storied career in the UFC.
