A hardware store employee from upstate New York has wowed the internet after a customer paid with a $5 bill from 1934. The story begins with Austin, a 26-year-old worker at the hardware store, who was taken aback by the sight of the 88-year-old bill. He recalls, "I was taken aback by its design, not having seen one like it before. Looking closer at it, I noticed the date printed being 1934, and that took me by surprise more. The bill-checking marker showed that it was a real bill, so I was immediately intrigued by it."
Every year, billions of dollars of U.S. currency are printed and engraved, yet many of these bills change hands with little thought. However, some bills carry a greater value than their face value, often becoming collectibles due to their unique history and rarity. This particular $5 bill is a silver certificate, which adds to its significance and allure.
In December, a woman made headlines by discovering a rare $1 bill while sorting through her late father's belongings. The dollar featured the serial number 00000001, which marked it as the first bill released in the B series of $1 bills printed in 1969. This rare find showcased how unique currency can become sought after, with similar bills listed for resale for nearly $2,000 on platforms like eBay.
With over 72,000 upvotes on Reddit's r/mildlyinteresting forum, the unusual $5 bill quickly gained attention. Many users pointed out that the bill was a silver certificate, a unique part of American history. Silver certificates were first issued by the U.S. government in the 1800s, allowing holders to redeem them for a specific amount of silver. However, the redemption period for these certificates ended in June 1968, making them valuable collector's items today.
"I didn't know it was a silver certificate until it was pointed out in the comments of my post. Seeing some of the auctions of similar bills surprised me as well," Austin later shared. While these bills can no longer be exchanged for precious metals, they are still valued by collectors, with similar bills listed for sale on platforms like eBay for upwards of $200.
The discovery of the $5 bill led to various reactions from Reddit users. Some suggested that Austin should keep it, while others expressed disappointment that the bill had been marked with a counterfeit pen. Austin himself was surprised by the viral success of his post, stating, "I didn't think it would surge quite like this, but I’m pleasantly surprised and of course owe gratitude to everyone who liked it."
