FDA Issues Class I Recall For Lactaid Milk Products Due To Allergens

FDA Recall Lactaid Milk HP Hood LLC Issues Alert for Undeclared Almond

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I recall for a line of milk products due to the potential presence of undeclared almonds from almond milk, a recognized allergen. This serious recall indicates that consuming these products may pose a significant risk to individuals with almond allergies. The FDA classifies a Class I recall as a situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product could result in serious adverse health consequences or even death.

For those with nut allergies, even the smallest traces of almond protein can lead to severe allergic reactions, which may include anaphylaxis—a life-threatening condition. The recall affects select units of 96 oz refrigerated Lactaid milk, which is distributed by HP Hood LLC, based in Massachusetts.

The containers in question were distributed to retailers and wholesalers across 27 states between September 5 and September 18. Detailed information about the recall, including specific dates, is available in the company’s announcement. Consumers are strongly advised to be cautious and check their milk products for potential allergens.

Several variations of Lactaid milk are included in the recall, and all affected containers are marked with the code 51-4109 P2 printed on the top center of the milk jug. In March, a similar recall occurred involving chocolate cherry granola that was found to potentially contain undeclared almonds, sparking fears of life-threatening allergic reactions among consumers.

Anyone who has purchased the recalled milk products should return them to the point of sale for a full refund. Consumers are also encouraged to report any adverse reactions to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program. Questions regarding returns and exchanges can be directed to Hood Consumer Affairs at 800-242-2423, available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or tongue, hives, and a sudden drop in blood pressure. It is crucial for individuals who have consumed the affected products and are experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.

Here are the details of the recalled products:
