A Tennessee man had an unorthodox and no doubt a painful response to being pursued by police on Wednesday morning. Tyson Gilbert, 39, of Cookeville, Tennessee, reportedly cut off his penis and threw it out the window of his Honda Accord while fleeing officers. The chase began when police found him parked partially in the way of traffic on Highway 70 near the town of Dowelltown. Speaking to radio station WLJE, Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Trooper Bobby Johnson said that the man took off when officers initially tried to signal him with their lights.
Officers ultimately ended up pursuing Gilbert across two counties, from Dowelltown to Lebanon. Somewhere along the way, he managed to cut off his own penis. At one point during the chase, he turned onto a side road and opened his car door, giving officers a glimpse at his bizarre and frenzied state. This shocking behavior raises many questions about mental health and the extremes individuals may go to under distress.
During the pursuit, Gilbert's erratic driving caused concern among officers. "He was all over the road the whole time," Johnson said, recalling how Gilbert turned off on Old Liberty Road, stopped, and briefly opened his car door while naked and covered in blood before continuing to drive. The chaotic chase eventually led to police deploying spike strips, which were effective in slowing down Gilbert's vehicle, allowing officers to box him in and end the pursuit.
The Alexandria Police Department explained that they deployed spikes that disabled the right front tire, causing Gilbert to continue slowly into Wilson County. Despite this, he refused to stop for law enforcement. Officers eventually managed to box him in, forcing him to halt. They quickly took Gilbert into custody and requested immediate medical attention for his severe self-inflicted wound.
Responding to inquiries, the THP public information office confirmed many details related to the pursuit and Gilbert's condition. They mentioned that he appeared to suffer from a self-inflicted wound, but could not confirm the more extreme claims surrounding his injury due to the ongoing investigation. In a troubling revelation, Gilbert claimed that he severed his own penis based on instructions from voices coming from the radio, which told him he needed to do so in order to save the world.
After the incident, Gilbert was transported to Vanderbilt Hospital for treatment, but no updates on his condition or whereabouts have been released since Wednesday. This bizarre case highlights the importance of mental health awareness and the often-unseen struggles that individuals may face.
