Trump’s Legal Battles: What Lies Ahead With The Supreme Court

Legal analyst Glenn Kirschner recently expressed that “all bets are off” regarding former President Donald Trump's ongoing legal issues with the U.S. Supreme Court. Facing numerous federal and state charges related to his attempts to overturn the election results of 2020, Trump, who is currently the GOP's presidential nominee, maintains his innocence, claiming that these legal challenges are politically motivated. The stakes are high as the Supreme Court's recent rulings could significantly influence the trajectory of these cases.

On July 1, the Supreme Court ruled in a pivotal 6-3 decision, stating that former presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts performed while in office, but not for unofficial acts. This ruling came in response to Trump's efforts to dismiss the federal election subversion case against him based on claims of immunity. Following this decision, the Department of Justice's special counsel, Jack Smith, revised Trump's indictment to comply with the Court's ruling, leading to a new indictment against Trump.

Kirschner, who has served as a U.S. assistant attorney and is known for his critical views on Trump and the Supreme Court, commented on his YouTube show, Justice Matters, about a separate case against Trump that was dismissed. In June 2023, Trump was indicted for allegedly mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House and obstructing efforts to retrieve them. This case was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, appointed by Trump, who ruled that Smith was improperly appointed. The case's dismissal has now been appealed to the 11th Circuit Court, with Smith arguing that Cannon's decision contradicts established appointment practices at the DOJ.
