Serious Ice Cream Recall: FDA Issues Warning Over Potential Listeria Contamination

Ice cream products from multiple brands recalled due to potential

Numerous ice cream products recalled due to food poisoning fears have been given a risk classification by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This alarming news comes after Maryland-based Totally Cool Inc. announced a voluntary nationwide recall of several ice cream products. The recall is rooted in concerns over potential contamination with the Listeria monocytogenes bacterium, which poses a significant health risk.

The issues were first detected during testing by the FDA, prompting action from the company. In late June, a wider recall was initiated that affected multiple ice cream brands produced by Totally Cool, Inc., including those under the Dolcezza brand. The FDA has since classified these products, indicating a serious public health concern.

All 13 recalled ice cream products have now been assigned a Class II risk definition by the FDA. This classification signifies a situation in which exposure to the contaminated products may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, while the probability of severe health issues remains low. However, it is crucial for consumers to be aware of the risks associated with these products.

According to the FDA, symptoms of Listeria infection can manifest days or weeks after exposure. Those who experience less severe illness may suffer from symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal distress. More serious cases can lead to severe complications such as headaches, stiff neck, confusion, and even convulsions. This makes it essential for consumers, especially those in vulnerable populations, to stay informed and cautious.

The following Dolcezza products have been classified by the FDA:

  • 16 fl oz Mascarpone & Berries Ice Cream Pints
  • 16 fl oz Roasted Strawberry Ice Cream Pints
  • 16 fl oz Vanilla Bean Ice Cream Pints
  • 16 fl oz Peanut Butter Mash and Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream Pints

  • 16 fl oz Hot Cocoa Ice Cream Pints
  • 16 fl oz Sugar Cookie Dough Ice Cream Pints
  • 16 fl oz Dark Chocolate Ice Cream Pints

The products were distributed nationwide and were available for purchase at retail locations as well as online. If you have any of these products, please check the labels and discard them if necessary. These foodborne illnesses can have severe health impacts, particularly for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, children, and older adults. If you or someone you know has consumed these products and is experiencing symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice promptly.
