The Kansas City Chiefs are currently located in Kansas City, Missouri. However, the team could be in a bit of trouble as a deal for the new stadium renovation has yet to be approved. The situation calls for urgency as local taxpayers have recently voiced their concerns regarding funding for a significant renovation project.

Back in April, local taxpayers in Jackson County rejected a proposal that would have been used to renovate Arrowhead Stadium and also create a new ballpark for the Kansas City Royals to play. The proposal was for $2 billion to be paid with taxes, along with the investment of $1 billion from The Royals and owner John Sherman.
With the refusal being rejected, the Chiefs organization could then do a few things to combat the refusal. They could either come back with a new deal that would be more acceptable to local taxpayers, try and find third-party investors that would help in aiding the steep price for renovations, or completely relocate the team.
Though Missouri would likely not allow the best and arguably most popular team in the NFL to relocate to Kansas, it appears Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is already looking at locations out of state. Hunt spoke to reporters on Wednesday and stated that the organization is currently exploring multiple options to get a new stadium and potentially a new training facility as well.
“So for the last three months or so since I had a chance to visit with y’all at training camp, we have been working on creating some options. Not only for the stadium but for potentially a new training facility. We have been looking at a lot of sites, on both the Kansas and Missouri sides, as well as talking to the political leaders in Missouri about perhaps renovating Arrowhead,” Hunt stated.
Missouri losing the Chiefs might not be an option, as back in June Missouri Governor Mike Parson told the Associated Press, “We’re going to make sure that we put the best business deal we can on the line. Look, I can’t blame Kansas for trying. You know, if I was probably sitting there, I’d be doing the same thing. But at the end of the day, we’re going to be competitive.”
Even with the governor stating the state would be aggressive, Kansas also took a shot at luring the Chiefs over the state line. Also in June, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed legislation into law, offering $700 million or more to the Chiefs and Kansas City Royals to relocate.
With these situations happening months ago, and now Hunt stating that the Chiefs organization is exploring options in both Missouri and Kansas — things might be heating up regarding a complete relocation. The Chiefs are the biggest team in the NFL and are humming along to potentially land the first-ever third Super Bowl victory in a row. At 5-0, the team is favored to take it all again.
Missouri would be foolish to let the Chiefs relocate, considering the sheer money the state would lose if Kansas City relocated to Kansas. For more on the Chiefs, head to Newsweek Sports.
