Salmonella Contamination Sparks Nationwide Candy Recall

Palmer Candy Recalls Dozens of Candy Coated Treats Due to Salmonella

More than two dozen candy lines have been recalled amid concerns that they could be contaminated with the potentially deadly food poisoning bug salmonella. A variety of sweet treats, including caramel pretzels and cookies, were subject to this recall issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to potential public health risks. These products have been shipped across the nation to various stores, including Walmart, Hy-Vee, Dollar Central, and Target, among others.

Salmonella is one of the most common bacteria that cause food poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that affected individuals often suffer from diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, which can last for up to a week. While salmonella poisoning is usually not life-threatening, it poses a significant risk for vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

Recent concerns were first raised last month with products from Hy-Vee, including "To Go Cookies & Cream Mix" and "Whipped Cream Cheese Spread," which were manufactured by an unnamed third-party. On May 6, these items were recalled, and the FDA updated the warning, categorizing the recall as a "Class I" health risk, indicating it could potentially cause severe health consequences or even death. Fortunately, there have been no reported illnesses associated with these products, according to Hy-Vee.

Consumers across four states were impacted by Hy-Vee's voluntary recall, which was executed "out of an abundance of caution," according to the FDA's announcement at the time. Notably, the recall was part of a broader FDA action affecting numerous products and various other retailers. Hy-Vee confirmed that its involvement stemmed from a recall of products made by Palmer Candy Company due to potential salmonella contamination.

The FDA released a recall notice for Palmer Candy Company products on May 6, with additional updates including more products on May 18. Importantly, the two Hy-Vee products were not specifically mentioned in the documents available to the public. The FDA reported that over 30 items from Palmer Candy Company are sold at major retailers.

According to the FDA's May 18 announcement, the recalled confectionery items were distributed nationwide in stores like Walmart, Hy-Vee, Target, and Dollar General, reaching consumers in states including Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, and many others. The products come in various retail packaging, such as bags, pouches, and tubs.

So far, no illnesses related to this issue have been reported. Palmer Candy was alerted by its liquid coating supplier about a potential salmonella contamination linked to one of their suppliers. As a precaution, production has been halted while the FDA and the company continue their investigation into this matter.

For customers who purchased the affected confectionery items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company, the FDA advises returning them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions or concerns can reach out to the company at 1-800-831-0828 from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
