Vice President Kamala Harris' odds of winning the 2024 presidential election have worsened over the past 24 hours, according to a leading bookmaker. On Friday, Betfair offered odds of 6/4 (40 percent) for Harris achieving victory on November 5, compared to 4/6 (60 percent) for former President Donald Trump. As of Saturday morning, Harris' odds had lengthened to 8/5 (38 percent), while Trump's odds were cut to 5/8 (61 percent)—indicating that those placing bets were not convinced that Harris' rally with Beyoncé had an immediate positive impact on her campaign.
Beyoncé, a global music icon, joined Harris onstage in Houston, encouraging voters to support the Democratic presidential nominee to safeguard "the freedom to control our bodies." Meanwhile, Trump engaged in a three-hour podcast interview with Joe Rogan, where he reflected on his presidency, admitting that his "one mistake" was choosing people he "shouldn't have picked" for his administration.
In comments to Newsweek, Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom remarked, "Despite Harris' chances improving slightly this week after her Obama and Springsteen rally on Thursday, punters appear unconvinced by her A-list backers." He added that Harris' hope for a boost from Beyoncé's appearance at the Houston rally seems to have fallen flat, as it did not significantly alter the betting landscape.
Rosbottom explained, "Harris is at 8/5 today, giving her a 38 percent chance of becoming U.S. president. Meanwhile, Trump showed off the scar on his ear from an assassin's bullet during his chat with Rogan, which ranged from UFOs to JFK. His odds currently sit at 5/8, giving him a 61 percent chance of reclaiming the White House." Newsweek reached out to both campaigns for comments on Saturday, but did not receive responses outside regular office hours.
During her speech on Friday, Beyoncé emphasized women's empowerment, stating, "Imagine our daughters growing up seeing what's possible with no ceilings, no limitations. Imagine our grandmothers. Imagine what they feel right now—those who have lived to see this historic day." She continued, "Even those who are no longer physically with us, imagine all of their sacrifice—the sacrifices made so we can witness the strength of a woman standing in her power."
Recent analysis from the election website 538 revealed that Harris currently holds a 1.4-point lead in the popular vote, with 48 percent compared to Trump's 46.6 percent. However, it is worth noting that Harris' position has significantly declined this month, as she previously had a 2.6-point lead on October 1.
While Harris is leading in the national polls, 538 indicates that Trump has a greater likelihood of winning the Electoral College, with a 53 percent chance compared to Harris' 47 percent. This Electoral College system allows for a candidate to win the popular vote yet lose overall, as Hillary Clinton did against
