The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned residents in the central United States to prepare for significant weather events this week. With two rounds of strong storms on the horizon, snowfall has even been reported in Las Vegas, a city not typically known for snowy weather. The upcoming storms are expected to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and blizzard conditions to various regions, including the northern Plains and upper Midwest.
The NWS issued a blizzard warning early on Wednesday, highlighting hazardous conditions that are anticipated to persist. A new storm is moving through the Four Corners region, which will bring snow to the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes until Thursday. Alongside the snow, strong thunderstorms are projected to impact areas such as the Ark-La-Tex, Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, and Mid-South.
As the week progresses, ongoing blizzard conditions are expected in parts of the northern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley. The NWS also noted that blizzard conditions will affect eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota early Wednesday, before the storm system moves across Lake Superior and exits into eastern Canada.
Snow is forecasted to stretch from the Four Corners to the lower Great Lakes, lasting until early Friday. Strong to severe thunderstorms combined with heavy rain will continue to affect regions from the Ark-La-Tex and lower Mississippi Valley through to the Ohio Valley from Tuesday night into early Friday.
Additionally, blustery north to northwesterly winds may create brief periods of blizzard or near-blizzard conditions across parts of the upper Midwest, before tapering off to light snow later today. The NWS has indicated that wind gusts could exceed 40 mph in the Southern High Plains, leading to low visibility and challenging travel conditions.
Travelers are urged to take caution as significant blowing and drifting of snow could create "near impossible travel" conditions. The extreme weather is likely to impact local infrastructure, and residents are advised to stay informed and prepared.
Interestingly, snowfall has reached as far as Las Vegas, Nevada, where residents were caught off guard by the wintery weather. Social media has been buzzing with videos of people enjoying the rare snowy Valentine’s Day. One memorable clip features a couple making their way to their wedding, showcasing the unexpected charm of a white Valentine's Day in Las Vegas.
Weather updates indicate that this winter storm follows a pattern of significant snowfall in Las Vegas, with the last occurrence being in 2019, when parts of the city received up to eight inches. The NWS is also observing a surge of mild air moving across the eastern U.S. towards the Great Lakes, bringing with it a potential for record high temperatures, particularly in the Ohio Valley.
As we navigate through this unpredictable weather, it’s essential to stay prepared, stay informed, and heed all weather advisories. Remember, whether it's snow or rain, staying safe is the top priority!
