'Money Heist' concludes filming for fifth and final season

Money Heist is, sadly, coming to an end with its fifth season, which was split into two parts, the second of which will be released on Friday, December 3. Fans worldwide have been captivated by the thrilling saga of The Professor and his team of robbers as they navigate complex heists and emotional turmoil. As we approach the final episodes, anticipation builds around how this iconic series will tie up its intricate plot threads.

Volume 5 Part 2 will bring The Professor (Álvaro Morte) and his fellow robbers' storyline to a close with the conclusion of their heist in the Bank of Spain; whether this will end well or not is to be seen. The stakes have never been higher, with Lisbon (Itziar Ituño), Denver (Jaime Lorente), Rio (Miguel Herrán), Helsinki (Darko Perić), Mónica (Esther Acebo), Palermo (Rodrigo de la Serna), Bogotá (Hovik Keuchkerian), and Manila (Belén Cuesta) remaining in the bank while The Professor is outside hoping to save them. This cliffhanger has left fans eager to see how the characters will fare in the final showdown.

Despite the show's popularity, it will be ending after the events of the next five episodes. Here, Newsweek can share why this decision was made. The cast and crew have openly discussed their thoughts on the conclusion of the series, emphasizing the importance of not overstaying their welcome and wanting to leave viewers wanting more.

What You Will Learn

  • The reasons behind the show's conclusion and the producers' insights.
  • The emotional journey that the final episodes will take viewers on.
  • Future projects related to the Money Heist universe, including a prequel series.
  • What fans can expect from the final season and its impact on the franchise.

Why Is Money Heist Ending After Season 5?

The cast and crew took part in a virtual press conference, which Newsweek attended, where executive producer Jesús Colmenar addressed their reasoning behind the show coming to an end. Reflecting on the second half of season 5, Colmenar stated, "I think it has a different pace; it’s not such a warlike confrontation, but it’s a series that is always in crescendo until the end, until the last episode. I will say it’s a very special one and different from what we’ve done until now."

He added that while Part 1 of Volume 5 was packed with "pure adrenaline," the forthcoming episodes would be more "emotional" and will have "unexpected twists and turns." This shift in tone is expected to resonate deeply with audiences, making the finale a memorable experience. Creator Álex Pina also commented that the fifth season features a pivotal moment, which is the death of Tokyo, stating, "It’s a ticking bomb that radically changes the show and sets the stage for the end."

The decision to end the story was also to ensure that they didn’t overstay their welcome and tire of new ideas with the characters. In the conference, Morte explained, "The show is coming to an end when it had to come to an end. It’s the perfect time. We cannot squeeze the characters anymore; we’ve taken the best from them, and I think it’s a really smart decision to stop here."

So, What’s Next in the Money Heist Universe?

Fans of Money Heist may be sad to hear that the show is over, but it’s not the end of the franchise as a whole. Netflix announced a prequel series that will focus on Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso. This new show will explore Berlin’s life before the events of Money Heist and delve into the character's backstory, giving fans a chance to understand more about one of the franchise's most enigmatic characters.

The prequel will be set before Season 1 and 2’s heist in the Royal Mint of Spain, where Berlin sacrificed himself to give the others enough time to escape the police’s clutches. This backstory promises to add depth to the beloved character and expand the universe that fans have come to adore.

Additionally, Netflix has confirmed that there will be a Korean remake of the show, which will star Squid Game's Park Hae-soo as Berlin. This indicates the show's global impact and its ability to resonate across different cultures. The legacy of Money Heist will live on, ensuring that fans have more content to look forward to even after the series concludes.

Money Heist Volume 5 Part 2 is out on Netflix now.
