At least six Florida cities are bracing for an extraordinary weather event this week, as they are expected to receive their average monthly rainfall in just a matter of days. A significant plume of moisture from the Caribbean is sweeping across the Sunshine State, bringing with it heavy rains that are projected to peak from Wednesday to Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings indicating that flooding may begin as early as Tuesday and could persist throughout the weekend.

This week’s weather comes on the heels of record-breaking heat across multiple cities in southern Florida during May. Last week, similar extreme temperatures were reported in much of the southern United States, including states like Texas and Arizona. This shift from heat to heavy rainfall might come as a surprise to many residents.

On Monday, the NWS office in Florida's Tampa Bay area released a detailed map forecasting rainfall estimates through Friday. According to the predictions, several locations may receive at least six inches of rain, with Fort Myers projected to be the hardest hit. The forecast for Fort Myers anticipates between 15 to 20 inches of rain from this storm, which is alarming considering the city's average monthly rainfall for June stands at just 9.66 inches.

Several other Florida cities are also anticipated to receive their average June rainfall within this short time frame. Cities such as Belle Glade, Immokalee, West Palm Beach, Punta Gorda, and Sarasota are included in this forecast. Historical records indicate that the average rainfall for June in these cities ranges from about 7.05 inches to 9.49 inches, which means that a significant weather event is upon them.

The NWS has cautioned residents in impacted areas to remain vigilant as conditions are ripe for localized flash flooding. Meteorologists stress that having a plan for receiving alerts and taking precautionary actions is crucial during this time. With rain expected to be at its heaviest on Tuesday and Wednesday, it is imperative for residents to stay informed.
