A recent TikTok video skyrocketed to viral status after a user shared the birth of a rare two-headed calf. This unique phenomenon, known as polycephaly, occurs when an embryo fails to divide completely or when two embryos fuse together incompletely. While this condition can affect both humans and animals, it is incredibly rare, particularly among mammals. Polycephaly is more commonly observed in reptiles, such as snakes and turtles, making this two-headed calf an extraordinary sight.

The calf featured in the viral video can be seen resting on the barn floor, displaying her two heads back to back and facing opposite directions. Viewers are captivated by her appearance, which includes four eyes, four ears, two mouths, and two noses. This remarkable visual has left many speechless, echoing the astonishment of countless viewers online.

Uploaded on January 14 to the TikTok account @twoheaded.calf3, the video has amassed nearly 30 million views, over 4 million likes, and 39,300 comments. The reactions range from shock to concern for the well-being of this rare baby calf, showcasing the deep emotional connection people have with animals, especially those in unique circumstances.

Despite the beauty and wonder of this two-headed calf, polycephalic animals face numerous challenges regarding survival and development. Unfortunately, many do not live long, and the longest-lived documented case was a cow named Gemini, who lived for 17 months, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

In a follow-up video, the creator mentioned that the calf is still alive but struggles to eat or drink milk independently. To assist her, the creator's brother has been helping by holding up the two heads and bottle-feeding them, showcasing the care and effort being put into her survival.

The calf's journey has captured the attention of millions, and viewers are rallying support for her recovery. Comments from viewers include heartfelt messages, such as, "Sending lots of love and well wishes to this precious little girl," and "Wow, this made me emotional. Beautiful and nature is amazing."

Sadly, the mother of the calf has not fared well after the difficult birth. The creator shared in a comment that she has developed a high temperature and is in need of medical assistance. They have already taken her to the vet, and there are indications that she may require surgery.

Newsweek reached out to @twoheaded.calf3 for further information, but as of now, the specifics of the situation remain unverified.

Correction 01/17/2024, 9:47 a.m. ET: This article was updated to clarify that Gemini the cow lived for 17 months.
