The term "pillow face" has seen a surge in discussions on social media, with search interest skyrocketing since early July. Many are eager to understand what this phenomenon is and how they can prevent it from affecting their appearance. In recent years, cosmetic procedures, particularly those involving dermal fillers, have become increasingly popular, but with this rise comes a greater need for awareness and education about potential side effects.

According to Samuel Lin, a board-certified plastic surgeon and associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, "In the past five years, dermal filler procedures have more than doubled their annual numbers." The ASPS Statistics Report 2023 revealed that there were a staggering 6.2 million filler procedures performed in 2023—equating to approximately 17,000 procedures each day! This boom in popularity raises questions about the safety and effects of these treatments, particularly as they relate to the alarming trend of pillow face.

Dermal fillers are primarily used to enhance facial volume, smooth out wrinkles, and rejuvenate one's appearance. However, they typically last anywhere from 6 to 18 months based on the injection site. Ari Hoschander, another board-certified plastic surgeon, explained that areas like the lips require more frequent injections due to the constant movement that leads to faster disintegration of the filler. This temporary nature of fillers, combined with improper techniques or overuse, can contribute to the development of pillow face, drawing attention to the importance of choosing skilled practitioners and adhering to post-procedure care.
