Significant Rainfall Expected As Atmospheric River Approaches The Pacific Northwest

Exceptional June rain soaks Pacific Northwest due to atmospheric river

An atmospheric river event is poised to bring significant rainfall to the Pacific Northwest, with meteorologists tracking a storm system extending from Hawaii to the Oregon coast. This upcoming weather phenomenon promises heavy precipitation and mild temperatures, particularly affecting Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington. Expected to commence Friday evening, the peak intensity of rainfall is predicted for Saturday night into Sunday, which could lead to challenges for local residents.

According to meteorologist Josh Cozart, the characteristics of this atmospheric river extend beyond the normal expectations of mild temperatures and heavy rain. Cozart explained to local news outlet KOIN 6 that it is the "long tail of the spiral stretching to the south" that qualifies this weather system as an atmospheric river, which is set to transport moisture from Hawaii directly to the Pacific Northwest this weekend.

The weather event has already begun with strong easterly winds affecting western Oregon and southwest Washington. Wind gusts may reach 30-35 mph, causing temperatures in Portland to rise into the mid-60s under partly cloudy skies. As Friday evening approaches, forecasters expect a shift in conditions where wind speeds will decrease and rain chances will significantly increase.

As the rain sets in, it may mark the start of an extended period of wet weather that could last through the middle of the following week. The National Weather Service's lead meteorologist, Chris Burling, expressed some caution regarding the terminology surrounding the storm, suggesting that while significant rainfall is expected, it may not meet all criteria to be classified as a full-blown atmospheric river event.

Regardless, anticipation is high for Saturday night into Sunday when the Portland area could see up to an inch of rainfall within a 24-hour period, with some regions potentially accumulating nearly two inches. As temperatures are projected to cool into the 50s next week, residents should prepare for various impacts, including potential ponding of water on roadways. However, widespread flooding is not expected, as river levels remain relatively low.

For those planning outdoor activities, especially around Halloween, it's worth noting that while there might be some breaks in the rain on October 31, scattered showers could still disrupt trick-or-treating plans.
